about

"I really enjoy my other Spires records, so I was looking forward to this one. I picked it up on the first week it was out. Now I’m playing it every day. Sometimes, I even put on headphones and just listen to it. It’s rare that I do any of these things" - Razorcake

The latest salvo from Ventura, CA’s Spires highlights this duo’s adept distillation of nonchalance, charm, and intelligence, all by way of a mid-fidelity aesthetic wherein clangy guitars hitch a ride atop subtle traces of vibrato and stray undercurrents of organ. The album’s title is apt, as the Spires have a tendency to stretch back and purloin some of the most enticing attributes from former head-of-the-class indie institutions Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Versus, while bearing enough elasticity to summon earlier epochs (think Wire circa “Outdoor Miner”) and even more negligibly the Velvets. Era Was is one of those rare records that’s both a thoroughly engaging listen in the here and now, and an immediate incentive to excavate the band’s past endeavors. Jack Rabid - Big Takeover
